Detail Itinerary
Day 01: Arrive in Pakse
Pakse, the provincial capital of Champasack at the confluence of the Mekong and Sedon rivers, is the center for trading between Laos and Thailand as well as gateway to the fascinating south. Meet your guide and take a drive to visit the stunning pre-Angkorian temple, Wat Phou, built between 6th and 13th centuries. Reaching there requires a local ferry crossing and a drive along the quaint village. Lying on a hillside and offering spectacular views on the surrounding plains and Mekong River, the UNESCO World Heritage site is divided in two parts. The lower part consists of two ruined palace buildings at the edge of a pond. The upper section with the temple sanctuary itself once enclosed a large Shiva phallus (linga). Historians believe this site was chosen by the Khmers because of a natural spring that flows from mountain and the peak’s resemblance of a Shiva phallus. Return to Pakse. Note: the upper section might not suitable for the elderly due to the steep steps. Overnight at hotel in Pakse.
Meals included: Dinner
Day 02: Khong Island
Embark on a scenic 2.5-hour drive to Khong island - its lovely fishing villages, serene monasteries and lush vegetation offers an authentic glimpse into the peaceful Lao way of life. En route, visit the Khmer archeological site of Oum Moung before crossing the Mekong River by ferry. Board a traditional boat to visit the surrounding islands of Done Ket and Done Som for more insights into the lifestyles of the fishermen. Continue to Done Khone Island and hike along the ancient railway built by the French in 1897. Continue by boat to Ban Nakasang and drive to Khone Phapheng Waterfall, South East Asia's biggest. If you’re lucky, you may see Mekong dolphins. Return to Pakse for the night. Overnight at hotel in Pakse.
